Ok. I have registered the mdio driver from the Ethernet device probe function with platform_driver_register (like the ls1046a).
Now the Atheros driver isregistered first prior to probing the mdiobus. I got a crash but I shall figure out.

Thanks.

Okay, here is the problem. You registered the mdio driver at coredevice
level, but the phy drivers are registered at device level. That means
the at803x driver is not present when the phys are probed and then
genphy is used as fallback.

IMO the phy drivers should be moved to an earlier level, like core
or coredevice.

For some reason mdio_bus_match is not called.
So if I understand the sequence correctly

First phy_register is called and assign genphy to all phys

phy_register_device id = 0x0, register genphy_driver.drv = 0xbbe7c5fc, Generic PHY
phy_register_device id = 0x4dd074, register genphy_driver.drv = 0xbbe7c5fc, Generic PHY
phy_register_device id = 0x4dd074, register genphy_driver.drv = 0xbbe7c5fc, Generic PHY

I see no call being made to mdio_bus_match

Then I see that the Atheros PHY driver is registered:
register generic for: Generic PHY, id = 0xffffffff, config_init = 0xbbe143b8
register specific for: Atheros 8031 ethernet, id = 0x4dd074, config_init = 0xbbe15f38

And eventually phy connect who uses the generic driver

Is not it the problem that the Atheros driver should be loaded first.

ret = register_device(&phydev->dev);
          if (ret)
                  return ret;

          if (phydev->bus)
                  phydev->bus->phy_map[phydev->addr] = phydev;

          phydev->registered = 1;

          if (phydev->dev.driver)
                  return 0;

          phydev->dev.driver = &genphy_driver.drv;

Would not the line above overwrite the Atheros driver anyway?

I have no idea what goes wrong here.

Some things to dig further:

A phy is registered in phy_register_device(). The call to register_device()
in that function will end up in mdio_bus_match(). You could add some
debugging there to see which phy ids are matched against each other.

An idea is that the at803x driver is not yet registered by the time
phy_device_connect() is called, but I don't see how this could happen.

Is this the only phy or are there others? What does "devinfo mdio0-phy03" say?
miitool -v output might be interesting as well.

I had a short look at your changes to the gianfar driver. You added
this:

+       priv->phyaddr = -1;
+       np = of_parse_phandle_from(dev->device_node, NULL, "phy-handle", 0);
+       if (np) {
+               struct device_node *parent;
+               uint32_t reg = 0;
+
+               /* Get mdio parent */
+               parent = of_get_parent(np);
+               if (!parent)  {
+                       pr_err("No parent node for phy-handle\n");
+                       return PTR_ERR(parent);
+               }
+               priv->gfar_mdio = parent->dev->priv;
+               if (!of_property_read_u32(np, "reg", &reg))
+                       priv->phyaddr = reg;
+       }

This is not necessary when your phy is described in the device tree. You
neither need the mdiobus in the ethernet driver nor the phy address.
Instead, just call:

ret = phy_device_connect(edev, NULL, -1, gfar_adjust_link, 0, interface);

phy_device_connect() will parse the phy-handle property then and connect
the ethernet device to the correct phy.

I am not sure though if that's part of your problem, because correctly
open coding what phy_device_connect() does should have the same effect.

Sascha

Hello I have enabled the at803x driver to support the AR8031. However, only the generic PHY driver config_init get called.
phy_driver_register: 00000000
register generic for: Generic PHY, 0xffffffff
phy_driver_register: bbe15d54
register specific for: Atheros 8035 ethernet, 0x4dd072
phy_driver_register: bbe15d54
register specific for: Atheros 8030 ethernet, 0x4dd076
phy_driver_register: bbe15d54
register specific for: Atheros 8031 ethernet, 0x4dd074

call phy_init_hw
call config_init for: Generic PHY, 0xffffffff

I do not understand how to connect the AR802x phy driver to the device. Do I need to add something to the device tree?

We have a phy driver for the AR8033. Can you use it instead of putting
this into board code?

Indentation seems a bit broken here.

The upstream dts already has this.

Should this be I2C1 and I2C2?

What's the point in modifying this node when the status is set to
disabled at the same time?

Upstream dts has phy-connection-type. Decide for one property
consistently.

The changes to the network driver should be an extra patch, or better
multiple patches as there seem to be multiple types of changes squashed
together.
